Art on the Hump: Halloween Edition!

28 Oct

Despite a few technical difficulties of the sleep deprivation kind (What can I say? I’m in grad school) I am back again for another round of Art on the Hump! Instead of showcasing only one artist this week, I’ll be doing a mash up of some spook-filled artwork to get everyone in the mood for Halloween. I did a random search on DeviantArt and picked out a few pieces for your viewing pleasure.

NaBHan‘s been one of my favorite Vector artists for a long time and I found this little Halloween piece by him. Instead of using flat coloring that Illustrator is known for, he actually paints using the program and if you’ve tried to use the paint brush tool in that program, you’ll know how hard and unruly it can be, but NaBHaN has been able to reign in the beast to create flowing pieces that beautifully simplistic.

Jen Zee is an artist I discovered in my search of Halloween-inspired art and now I’m completely in love with her style! She is also on DeviantArt, but I randomly stumbled across her blog and knew she had to be featured here. Her work in with digital painting is envious and her eye for creating the right mood in a piece is spot on. Her work is definitely worth checking out.

WillemXSM is providing a different type of feel to round out the AH Halloween Special. He’s a designer and illustrator from he Netherlands and an avid lover of tattoos. This his most recent sketch he’s posted and will be colored later, but his eye for composition and color, and his drawing skills earned him a feature here (Did anyone catch that the sketch is done in traditional Halloween colors?). His work, even when in black and eye are beautiful, fun and lively. He is definitely someone to be on the look out for!

We’ve now arrived at the end of this special edition. Go out and gorge yourself on some candy and have a Happy Halloween!

Art on the Hump: Lois van Baarle a.k.a. Loish

21 Oct

If you can’t say wow after watching that animation, I don’t know what you would be awed by. This week’s artist is one I have been following for some time on DeviantArt. Lois, or more commonly known by the moniker Loish, is a Holland born artist who’s imagination and skill are as grand as the universe is big. She recently graduated from the Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Utrecht (HKU) and the piece posted above was created for her graduation animation.

Evening Glow

I fell in love with Loish’s stunning illustrations and digital paintings. It wasn’t until later that I discovered her beautiful and mind boggling animations. Her skill as an artist is refreshing and I can never seem to tire when looking at her pieces. Her work relies on saturated colors and textures that give it an organic feel that is a nice change of pace when browsing through thousands of artworks for inspiration. Please go an check out her work!

Art on the Hump: Charles Clary

7 Oct

I’m back with another round of Art on the Hump. We all need a bit of a push to get us over the middle of the week and hopefully you’ll be inspired enough by this artist to go out and do something spontaneous…or just finish out the week. It seems as thought I’ve been finding a lot of visual artists outside of the digital realm, but they are certainly worth it, especially Charles Clary.Charles is a relatively new artist who is currently working towards his MFA in painting at SCAD. Most of his work is posted to his blog linked above and it is definitely worth taking a look. If seen from the front in pictures, you can marvel at his sculptures as they play out across the wall…and then after ten minutes of staring in fascination realize they’re made completely out of paper. Each piece is hand cut and then assembled to create these optical illusion pieces. His designs bring up images of cellular structures or growing tubes of crystals found deep within the earth.

There is something wholly organic, but structural about each of his pieces. They are planned and yet sporadic, exuding the feeling that the paper grew into those shapes without having to be cut. Charles has an eye for detail and a steady hand in craftsmanship that many seem to not care about in contemporary times. His pieces still hold the powerful meaning and impact while still holding an attention to detail. Please visit his blog and comment on his pieces and encourage him in finishing out his masters. All of us graduate students need to know there is a life outside of the programs we are in.
